X Trail takes dodgy dirt roads in its stride

From Mildura, up the Arumpo Road to Mungo National Park, its only 100 kms of dirt road that was mainly in pretty good condition. Lake Mungo in the park, is most famous for providing evidence that Aborigines have lived in the area for 60,000 years. Its a huge dry lake bed surrounded by lunette dunes, you do yourself a favour and go there and have a look.

There is a drive yourself tour of 80 kms around the park which winds through the various land types that make up the park. Belah (Its a type of tree) Camping ground is about half way around the drive and it must be one of the most remote camping grounds in NSW. When I arrived there were a couple of campers and I added myself to the list. Whilst having a beer and admiring what a lovely quiet spot it was, a bloke pulled in with his caravan and was soon joined by 30 or 40 of his closest friends. The stay wasn't as good as it could have been, they even had generators (which I am sure are banned in National Parks), worst of all there were screaming children everywhere. Patience and good humour are my strong points, so I bit my lip and put with it, then left at daybreak next morning.

Destination Menindee, turn right out Mungo National Park and then left onto Top Hut Road, which is another 80 kms of dirt road to Pooncarie. From Pooncarie another 120 kms of, you guessed it, dirt road to Menindee. Camped by the Darling River at the main weir for the Menindee Lakes storage scheme. Nice quiet spot apart from the blokes from north of Sydney who were having a wonderful time away from their wife's. Their entertainment was drinking, drinking, drinking and Elvis, luckily I don't have too many problems with drinking or Elvis for that matter. By bedtime they could no longer make much noise and I didn't hear a peep from them until morning.

Broken Hill here I come, this time it is a 110 kms of good road, whose only shortcoming were the Kangaroos and Emus that you come across. I made it safely and am sitting in a coffee shop in "The Hill", drinking coffee and writing this. Did the touristy stuff, played golf but not very well I must admit. Spent the night at Mt Gipps station, it is a working sheep station that has accommodation, camp sites etc, highly recommended.
