Day 161 - Deloraine. Well I am in Tasmania, the crossing was unbelievabley calm although it was rough enough for one poor
chap to become quite green around the gills. Horace Greerly said "go west young man", so I did, all the way to the
"edge of the world" at the Arthur River (see photo left). The next landfall from here is Argentina over 14,000 kilometres
away, which is a long way however you look at it.
I was reading the local rules at a golf club the other day and they were a good example of why it pays to check what you
have just written (I should talk). It appears at this club if a cow steals your ball, then rule whatever comes into
the play. A quick look around the course seem to indicate that as there were no cows it was unlikely that I would
have my ball stolen by one, but I bet those bloody crows steal a few.
I have to get back to planning my trip, Tasmania is so small I need to make sure that I don't go rushing all over the place
and suddenly find I have ten days or whatever to wait until the the ship takes me back to the mainland. The best
way to make sure this doesn't happen is to plan everything to the day (I bet I stuff it up).
The township of Stanley, its a nice little town, with a great little 9 hole golf course that had greens that put the majority of golf courses I have played to shame. The big rock is is the remains of a volcanic plug, the rest of the volcano has eroded away leaving the plug sticking out. You will notice that the rock has its own micro climate, evidenced by the the cloud that is hanging over it.
Just driving along minding my own business when I saw this paddock, thats funny I think, they look like opium poppies.
Then I remembered something that I had nearly forgotten, they grow opium poppies in Tasmania for the production of drugs
such as morphine etc. There are of course signs attached to the fences surrounding the crops warning of the dire
consequences if you were to enter the paddock and even direr consequences if you were to use part of said crop for
other purposes.
Another museum, this one was pretty good though, lots of steam tractor engines. It makes a change from tractors,
although they did have a great little collection of Lanz Bulldog tractors. Its a great model steam traction engine,
I wonder if the club would let me use one as a golf cart, it would be ok for Northbridge, wouldn't slow play down at all.
